This is a question often asked by beginning Internet marketers and for the most part, there is no cut and dried answer. That is because text ads perform better in some situations while banner ads perform better in others. That's why it's so important to constantly test your marketing campaigns so you'll know what works best for you. For example, you could have one site that is entirely comprised of text ads, another site that uses only banner ads, and still another site that is made up of both text and banner ads. This is often referred to as "split testing" and is an invaluable tool for the Internet marketer.
One thing is certain. Ads that annoy consumers, such as floating or flashing banner ads should be avoided. There is nothing more annoying to someone trying to play a game or look up information than a banner ad that is hard to get rid of. Even if the ad is somehow clicked on during this process, you can bet that the annoyed visitor won't be hanging around long enough to make a purchase. Banner ads do have a place, though. You just have to be diligent enough to discover where they work best.
Text links can be embedded in copy and are thought to have some advantages over banner ads. You can easily change the size and color of your link and they work in places that banner ads wouldn't be suitable, such as the signature line in your email or forum post, although you will sometimes find banner ads in forum posts as well. You can also put more text ads on a web page with out making the reader mad compared to banner ads. Most people hate seeing a lot of banner ads on a web page so text ads give you a better chance to get your message out to more people. You can put a text ad almost anywhere and a banner ad you can't.
On the plus side, though, you can get really creative with banner ads. Banner ads come in a variety of sizes and colors and even shapes sometimes. You can even add audio, which is a great attention getter. Sometimes images can garner more attention than just plain text; the trick is in choosing the appropriate ad for the occasion or site. Some websites do well with banner advertising while others do much better with text. You may find that blogs get a much better response with text ads than with banner ads. You may also discover that your website gets more response from banner ads. In addition, it often depends on what the subject is as to what kind of ad works best for you. The only way you will know for sure is to experiment with both types of ads to see which ones work best for you.
Affiliate marketers often find that the banner ads provided to them when they sign up as an affiliate for a certain product or service work well simply because of brand recognition. If you are marketing a popular product and you have access to instantly recognizable banner ads that promote that product, you don't want to overlook them. Test the waters, experiment with both kinds of ads, and then use the ones that serve you the best. FREE Newsletter
